Mazda Recycles, Reuses and Reduces Energy with i-ELOOP

Over the past few years, automakers have turned a green eye towards vehicle powertrain. While Mazda continues to follow suit with technology such as SkyActiv, the innovative automaker is shuffling up the cards by introducing an all-new regenerative braking system called i-ELOOP or Intelligent Energy Loop.

Unlike other eco-friendly brake technologies with batteries, i-ELOOP uses a capacitor to temporarily store large volumes of electricity that can be used to power such electrical automotive components as climate control and audio systems. Wondering what a capacitor has to do with brakes? Here's the kicker: the stored energy comes from vehicle deceleration. As soon as a driver begins to take their foot off acceleration and move towards the brakes, i-ELOOP converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into re-usable electricity. To get really technical, the system makes use of a variable voltage alternator, low-resistance, Electric Double Layer Capacitor and DC/DC convertor.

Laird Noller Automotive, for one, is extremely excited to see i-ELOOP at work in new Mazda models starting next year. Not only does the regenerative braking system improve fuel economy by up to 10-percent but it serves as an excellent display of Mazda intelligence. The system also works with existing stop-start technology to effectively extend the period in which the engine can be shut off.

To learn more about where Mazda is taking green technology, don't hesitate to contact Laird Noller Automotive. We're always eager to answer any questions you may have. Also, be sure to check back - as soon as i-ELOOP arrives at 935 West 23rd Street Lawrence, Kansas 66046, you'll be the first to know!
